Overseas Voter Survey
Context
The Center for Civic Design (CCD) is an organization that focuses on research and testing to improve the usability of election materials. They were conducting a study of ranked choice voting for overseas absentee voters.
My role was to create a screener survey that would identify participants for these user testing sessions. We also wanted to use the screener survey as an opportunity to gather demographic and background data about overseas voters. I presented this data as part of the final research study.
Objective
To survey overseas voters in order to gather demographic and background data, and to identify participants for user testing.
Process
I started by defining the research goals, as a subset of the larger project. I also performed a user analysis, to better understand how users might perceive and respond to each question.
The survey design process was heavily informed by the book Forms that Work written by Caroline Jarrett. This included creating a Question Protocol spreadsheet which broke down the details for every question, from response options, to user answering strategies, to connecting each question to the research goals.
We chose a WordPress website as the platform for the survey so that we could customize the design and use conditional logic within the survey. I built the site with a minimal template to match the CCD branding, but heavily customized with code and a form building plugin.
Results
The goal was to get 50 participants; over 75 completed the survey. You can see some of the survey design materials and final data presented in the images attached to this case study.
